Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer Toyota has placed first in YouGov’s 2022 Automotive and Mobility Rankings for the United States.
The annual rankings are determined by a brand’s Index score, a measure of overall brand health calculated by taking the average of General Impression, Quality, Value, Customer Satisfaction, Recommendation, and Corporate Reputation scores in YouGov BrandIndex from Feb 1 2021 to Jan 31 2022. Scoring 36.2, Toyota’s top berth equals its performance in our global tables – where it was the overall winner out of all automotive brands in our 22-market rankings.
With a score of 30.6 and 22.0 respectively, Honda and Subaru complete an all-Japanese top three for the US – with homegrown brands Ford (21.6) and Chevrolet (21.3) filling out the top five. Two other Japanese brands, Nissan (17.1) and Lexus (16.4), placed sixth and seventh meaning that, all in all, the American top ten is half-Japanese.
German automakers Mercedez-Benz (15.9) and BMW (15.7) came in eighth and ninth, while Volvo rounds out the top ten with a score of 13.7.
Best Automotive Retailers 2022
Autozone have come top of our 2022 Automotive Retailers list with a score of 26.9.
O’Reilly Auto Parts (22.1), NAPA Auto Parts (20.8), Advance Auto Parts (20.2), and Pep Boys (11.1) complete the top five.
Best Retail Gasoline Brands 2022
The top five Retail Gasoline brands according to the American public are Shell (22.6), Chevron (15.9), ExxonMobil (15.1), Sunoco (12.4), and BP (11.6)
Circle K (10.5), Marathon (10.0), Gulf (8.8), CITIGO (8.3), and Valero (8.1) fill out the rest of our top 10.
Best Automotive Accessories Brands 2022
Finally, our rankings show that Goodyear (26.7) and Michelin (26.4) occupy the top two berths of our Automotive Accessories rankings, with a difference of just 0.3 points. Armor All (19.5), Valvoline (19.0), and Pennzoil (18.9) were also among the top five.
Firestone (18.8), Bridgestone (18.5), DieHard (16.9), BF Goodrich (16.8), and Mobil 1 (14.8) filled out the other end of a closely-fought table.

The data included in the YouGov’s Automotive & Mobility Rankings 2022 has been drawn from YouGov BrandIndex. The markets included were Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the US.
YouGov’s Automotive & Mobility Rankings 2022 show the brands with the highest average Index scores between February 1, 2021 and January 31st, 2022. The scores are mostly representative of the general population of adults 18+ (some are online-representative or urban rep). All Index scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place; however, we have used additional precision to assign ranks. All brands have been tracked for at least 6 months to be included in the rankings and have been tracked for at least 18 months to appear in the Improvers tables.
Each day consumers are asked about their views on automotive brands across various markets, which allows YouGov to build a picture of how these brands are perceived by the general public through comparing Index scores – which is a measure of overall brand health calculated by taking the average of general impression, quality, value, customer satisfaction, recommendation and corporate reputation scores.
General impression – whether someone has a positive or negative impression of a brand
Quality – whether consumers think the brand represents good or poor quality
Value – whether consumers think the brand represents good or poor value for money
Customer satisfaction – whether someone is a satisfied or dissatisfied customer
Recommendation – whether someone would recommend a brand to a friend or not
Corporate reputation – whether someone is proud or embarrassed to work for a brand
